“Sorry I'm late.”

I glanced up from my menu to see Bradley scooting into the bench across mine. His presence immediately incited movement from the curious patrons in the booths around us. Gap-mouthed realization inspired the few that had been struggling to place me since I got here, Bradley's arrival clicking everything into place. Necks craned from their seats to get a better look at the handsome young billionaire. As I continued to shrink against the back of my chair, Bradley's composure remained unswerving to the wildfire of whispers spreading around him. He browsed through his menu nonchalantly, sipping from his water glass.

“You alright there?” said Bradley, peering over at my cowering posture with a lifted eyebrow. “You keep doing that and you'll be eating off the floor by the time your starters get here.”

“How do you get over all the staring?” I shook my head, flabbergasted.

“Are they staring?” asked Bradley inattentively, flipping to the next page of the menu. “Just relax – you'll get used to it. If you just act natural, they'll lose interest real fast.”

“Easier said than done,” I mumbled, pouting.

“How y'all doing? My name is Ki-ki, and I'll be your server today. Are we ready to order?”

“Pleasure, Ki-ki,” said Bradley smoothly, thumbing across the page. “I'll have a Denver omelet and a Turkish coffee, thanks.”

“And I'll have the Cowboy Sunrise platter – eggs over-easy with a side of home fries, and a sweet tea,” I ordered, beaming brightly as I handed back our menus.

The blue-haired server took our menus and hustled back to the server's station to place our orders. This prompted a brief rift between us. I cleared my throat, unable to keep the jitters away from my tingling fingers. Wetting my lips eagerly, I opened my mouth to speak.

“I have something to –”

“You look gorgeous tonight, by the way.”

“I – what?”

My cheeks rosied at the sudden compliment. Bradley's unwavering eyes were fixed on mine, just taking in every inch of me. I fingered the rose-gold book chain choker around my neck and adjusted the gauzy layers of my baby doll dress over my thighs.

“Thanks – first thing I found in my closet,” I lied, crossing my legs under the table.

It took me a good two hours or so, scavenging through the crap in my closet for something nice to wear for the occasion. With Vivienne adamantly refusing to break down her bitch walls, I had only myself to turn to for fashion advice. The lash extensions were the absolute worst – I nearly glued my eyelids shut. To avoid looking like a diseased alien had given me pink-eye, I rubbed that shit right off, having to make do with the light mascara much more up my alley instead. After a lengthy stint of head-banging and self-loathing, I finally settled on the baby doll dress I picked up from a flea market ages ago. Packed away in a dusty box hidden behind a gym bag, I'd nearly forgotten about its existence. Finally, I decided to pair my outfit with a set of cream pumps I'd only ever worn once to my cousin Daria's communion.
